 GUATEMALA with DON ANDREWS, AWS

Don Andrews -  FEB. 28-MAR. 9 - Watercolor

$1895 painters  $1695 non-painters

Guatemala is the land of volcanoes, cloud forests, coffee plantations and colonial cities.  Rich in folklore and mystical Mayan villages, it is the color that has beckoned artists from all over the world to its varied landscape.  The vibrancy of the textiles, still woven and worn by village women as they walk up and down the hilly roads, toting firewood or carrying their washing home from the lake, is a wonderful subject to paint. Country men and women still wear their garb denoting their town of origin. We plan to have a couple of days of painting the local natives.

After breakfast, we head for Panajachel for 4 nights on the shores of Lake Atitlan whose only two streets bustle with vendors, artisans, and restaurants.  Shopping will be a big temptation.  You’ll find jade, richly embroidered blouses and linens, ceremonial masks and jewelry that are for sale in shops or for barter in the open markets. During that time, we take a boat ride across the deeply blue Lake Atitlan, to the tiny village of Santiago de Atitlan, where the native language Tzutijil is still spoken and where weavers and beaders continue to sell their wares.

Another important day trip will be to Chichicastenango to experience one of the world’s most colorful folkmarkets.  It’s a place with shamanistic and ceremonial undertones. Most of the indigenes from surrounding villages will be there with their weavings, carvings and fabulous huipiles for sale.

Next, we’ll be transported to our hotel in Antigua, where we’ll spend 4 nights.  We have  another beautiful hotel with pool and patios where we can gather to paint or talk.  Antigua was once the capital of Guatemala.  Many colonial buildings, now in ruins, exist among posadas, restaurants, homes and gardens. Cobblestone streets, and brilliant colored houses are a perfect setting for our painting, if you dream of local color.  Don will also be painting models in ethnic clothing.

The first and last nights are spent in an airport hotel in Guatemala City
